Peace in Perspective

Preface

This book was first published at the end of 1997 in Armidale, sponsored by the Centre for Peace Studies of the University of New England. It was updated and re-published in Colombo in 1999, by the Centre for Society and Religion, with the help of Caritas Australia.

It reflects, among others, ideas I used to discuss with postgraduate students in a course, “Geographies of Peace”, which I offered in support of the University of New England’s Peace Studies programme. When, at the beginning of the year 2000, I ceased to be involved in that programme, I put the text of the book on the web for anyone to use other than for commercial purposes.

These pages may provide the reader with fuller insights into the concept of peace, something which I consider necessary in times when the world cries for peace but is unsure of where to look. What is said here is even more urgent and relevant in a world shaken, confused and challenged to the core by the events of September the 11th, 2001, and its aftermath.

Peace requires wisdom and continual conversion, a dying to self.
